New Zombie Panic! excitement to be expected!

Yes, it has been a while indeed! Not much has happened over the passed few months. No tournaments, no news releases, not a thing, but as always: that’s because the Zombie Panic! Team has been quite busy. Here’s an overall list of what to expect in the near future.

Let’s kick of with the most exciting news. Doens’t Zombie Panic! challenge you any more? Don’t you feel like there’s anything to fight for? This little update is going to change that. That’s right! ZP!S is finally giving into the well-known Steam achievements.

Of course, we are not given too many details about the precise achievements you can win, but expect achievements for killing certain amounts of zombies or using some guns a certain amount of time.

The release of this update isn’t entirely surprising, achievements have been topic for discussion for a long time on the ZP!S forums.

New map

Ever since ZPS_Subway got removed since it kind of doubled with the objective version of this map (ZPO_Subway), people have been looking for alternatives when it comes to maps that take place in a subway. The Playtesters even played the old Subway to find out what could be made better about this map. But instead of making some small adjustments and throwing Subway back into the maplist, the Team has been working on an entirely new map called ZPS_Underground.

You’ll notice that Underground’s roots can nonetheless be found in ZPS_Subway. You’ll find a good old café and s0me nice open areas.

Updates

Beside these two big addings there will also be some smaller updates. We can expect new weapons, new player models and of course the good old bug fixes.

Also, the Team announced that, rather than throwing one big patch into the world at once, they’ll be giving us smaller updates over a longer time sequence.

Concluded

Well then. We can expect achievements, a new map, some small updates and that all in the upcomming period. More news can be expected soon so keep checking out our website!

Oh, I almost forgot. Check out this short film which shows you some new stuff we can expect (notice the new character), and yeah, don’t pay too much attention to the teapots.

April Fool’s

Needless to say: the post about a zombie attack in Mexico yesterday, April 1st,  was part of a April Fool’s joke.

There is not really a zombie attack in Mexico. Or is there?

Zombie attack in Mexico

Today, 11 people got killed  in a zombie attack in Ejido La Esparanza (Mexico) according to the local authorities.

Juan Fernandez of the police in Santander Jiménez, the nearest city, said: “There were reports that a man, who was missing since two weeks, attacked people in Ejido. His wife was amazed by his return, but was charged right away.”

According to witnesses the man, known as Pablo ze Jueva, attacked the locals in a disturbing way using just his teeth and bare hands.

Beside the last reports, the police is no longer allowed to speak to the press. It is said that the national police now took over the case.

Tip of the week #6 – Grenades

Grenades are extremely lethal, but only if you use them the right way. So what should you do with one?

The grenade may look small, but it can deal massive damage: up to 300 HP can, literally, be blown away. However, it will only deal such amounts of damage when it is very close to the zombie.

Keep it close

Important to know: the further away the grenade is from the zombie, the less damage it deals. This may sound logical, but keep in mind that the grenade’s damage drops extremely fast, the further away it drops from the target. You’ll notice that a difference between one or two meters distance can decide whether a zombie dies or not. So how do we handle these ‘devices’ properly?

Go for groups

First of: never use a grenade versus just one zombie, unless you got absolutely nothing else. A grenade doesn’t deal 300 damage for nothing, wasting all that damage on one zombie would be a bad thing.

The kamikaze tactic

There are multiple situations in which a grenade works wells. First of all: a grenade is great as a suicide bomb. When you are obviously getting raped by a big group of zombies, and there are no chances of survival, using a grenade can work out lucrative. Most of the time, the horde of zombies will all go for you, since they all want the kill. Make good use of this, simply pull the pin and hold the grenade in your hands, it will blow everything away soon enough.

Slow ’em down or kill ’em

The second situation which works well for a grenade is when you a personally not lost yet, but there is still a big horde close to you. Popping a grenade and throwing it at the horde can work well at such a moment for two reasons: first of all, because you might kill a zombie, and second because it slows the horde down. A lot of zombies will search for cover when they see a grenade being throwed at them. This way, you can make the space between you and the horde bigger.

Cooking… a grenade!

Now, lets go down to the technical use of the grenade. Since the 2.0 patch it is possible to ‘cook’ a grenade, which means as much that you can hold the grenade in your hand after you pulled the pin, making it go closer to the moment of the explosion. This way, you can throw a grenade at a zombie and make it explode right away. Like that, the zombies will no longer be able to run away from your grenade, they’ll simply blow up right away.

Action info

To throw a grenade = Left mouse button
To cook a grenade = Hold left mouse button, release after some seconds

Learn to cook

Keep in mind that you don’t hold the grenade in your hands for too long, since it will explode right with you. And unless you go for the kamikaze tactic, you do not want this to happen. This will be something you’ll have to figure out for yourself. Some people prefer throwing a grenade after 2 seconds of cooking, I personally prefer 3 to 5 seconds. But of course, not everyone counts as fast as another. So like I said: go experiment with it yourself.

Drop it like it’s hot

Beside cooking a grenade, you can choose to ‘drop’ it. Dropping a grenade can be smart when you are being chased by a horde of zombies. Throwing a grenade at such a moment with your left mouse button would either make you throw the grenade too far in front of you, or too far behind you; either hurting you, or not hurting anyone at all. Therefor, dropping works better. The grenade will then literally fall down on the ground where you stand at that very moment. And when you run, this will mean that the zombies run towards it, and you away from it. You will then either kill a zombie or at least slow it down.

Action info

Dropping a grenade = Right mouse button

Keep in mind that a dropped grenade can not be cooked. So make sure there is some distance between you and the zombie(s). If the zombie is already too close to you, there will be no use to drop a grenade.

New patch, what do you think?

Now that it is certain that there will be a 2.1 patch for Zombie Panic! Source, what do YOU expect to get from it?

Do you have high hopes? Or do you think 2.1 will just contain some small fixes and updates?

Also, we have posted some more polls on our website, because we want to know your opinion about a whole lot more things. Just explore our website and share your opinion. Also, we take ideas and suggestions; feel free to mail us at: zombiepanicveterans@gmail.com.

Feel free to comment on this post, and let’s kick off with a poll to get an idea of what you think of the upcoming patch: 2.1.

Tip of the week #5 – Melee weapons

A frying pan, a crowbar or the big old sledge hammer, they all have one thing in common: they are melee weapons. Everyone spawns with one, but what to do with it? In other words: melee weapons, useless or great weapons to fight the horde with?

Zombie Panic! Source has around 14 melee weapons, but the fact that you all swing ’em, doesn’t mean that they are all very effective. There are a few things that decide how a melee weapon ‘swings’:

  1. the amount of damage it deals;
  2. the wielding speed;
  3. the weight, and last but not least;
  4. the reach.

This might make you think: so what is more important?

What to carry at a certain moment

First of all: there isn’t one general rule. A very fast wielding melee weapon can seem very lethal, but doesn’t always have to be as effective as you might think. The same goes for weapons that deal great amounts of damage, they are not all as effective as some others.

You should keep in mind: fast wielding weapons are generally light weighted weapons that deal small amounts of damage, on the other side: slow wielding weapons are generally heavy, but deal great amounts of damage.

Slow or fast

So what should you do? Carry that fast wielding weapon, or the slow wielding one? This greatly depends on what else you are carrying at that moment. For instance: when you carry a rifle with some extra ammo with you, it is probably not smart to carry a very heavy melee weapon.

First of all, because you won’t need one. Most of the times, the rifle will deal enough damage on its own. So you’ll notice that a melee weapon that deals small amounts of damage is good enough to finish off a zombie.

Secondly, a rifle is already a very heavy weapon that slows you down, when you decide to carry a, let’s say, sledge hammer, you’ll be even more slow. And being awfully slow in ZP:S can be lethal. Therefor: carry a melee weapon that doesn’t weight a whole lot. Like a wooden plank, which weights absolutely nothing.

When you carry a light gun

On the other hand, when you only carry a pistol, or some other light weapon, it can be handy to have a heavy melee weapon. A sledge hammer generally works very well with a pistol. Especially because this hammer deals 75 damage per hit.

Hint – when you carry a shotgun

Keep in mind that it is essential to be as fast as possible when you carry a shotgun. Therefor: don’t carry a heavy melee weapon. Actually, don’t carry one at all. And if you really do want to carry a melee weapon, you should go with the very lightest ones. For instance: the wooden plank which weights nothing.

Your preferation

But paying attention to what you are carrying is one thing, a second thing is what you personally prefer. Basicly it works like this:

  1. Light weapons deal small amounts of damage and wield very fast. If you prefer to simply bash a zombie very fast, this is your weapon to go with. Also, if you are very good in circle straving a zombie, a light melee weapon works very well too.
  2. Heavy weapons deal great amounts of damage, but wield very slowly. If you are good at punching and then backing off, this is your weapon to go with.

Action info – circle straving

Circle straving is a great tactic to kill zombies with. The principle is simple: you go close combat with the zombie when you carry a light melee weapon and keep walking around him. The zombie will find it hard to keep up with you and actually manage to hit you. Like this, your capable of killing a zombie rather fast and smooth, without taking too much damage yourself.

If you want to know how much damage a melee weapon deals, how fast it is or how much it weights, you can go here, to our melee weapon page. There you can find all the detailed information.

ZP:S 2.1 is a fact

Although the forums are dead and the game itself is all but crowded, ZP:S still seems to be alive. This website can confirm that a 2.1 patch for ZP:S is under construction.

The Zombie Panic! Team itself hasn’t officialy announced this new version of the game, but we can already say with certainty that a new ZPS map is in the making: ZPS_Underground. It’s hard to give away any details about this new map, but it is likely ZP:S will return to a more retro, old atmosphere that we know from maps like Asylum and Subway.

It is surprising that this new map is a ZPS (survival) one. In the last year, the Team pretty much only focused on ZPO (objective) maps and on developing a new gamemode (ZPA, for clanmatches). Back then, it seemed ZPS was an old style that didn’t have much future anymore. Only the unpopular ZPS_ClubZombo got released in the last two patches.

No further details about 2.1 are known, but we can expect more polishing work on the ZP:S characters and on some weapons, beside this new map.

Shotgun favourite ZP:S weapon

A poll on http://www.zombiepanicveterans.com shows that the majority of the Zombie Panic! players has the shotgun as his favourite weapon.

On the question: ‘What is your favourite ZP!S weapon?’ Were four possible answers: the magnum, a rifle, a shotgun or something different. Out of the 77 votes, a majority of 40% voted for the shotgun. The magnum made second place with 26% of the votes, followed by the rifle and something else, with both 17% of the votes.

‘Failchester’

The result is surprising, especially since shotguns like the Super Shorty and the Winchester are generally spoken very unpopular guns. This is caused by the small magazines (2 shells in the Winchester and 3 in the Super Shorty), combined with the awfully slow reload times. It is not for nothing that these guns have earned themselves the nicknames: ‘Failchester‘ and ‘Super Shitty‘.

Super Shorty

Remmington

It is therefor probable that especially the Remmington is a very popular gun amongst the Zombie Panic! players. Unlike the Winchester and the Super Shorty, the magazine of the Remmy can carry up to 6 shells. The higher weight of the Remmington gets compensated with the slightly shorter reload time and the seemingly more damage effective barrel.

Remmington 870

The magnum

A second place for the magnum is decent, but still surprising. After all, the magnum is (strictly spoken) the most effective gun. A shot to the head with a magnum garantees an instant death of a regular zombie after all. However, especially the fact that this gun recquires quite some skill makes it a lot less popular.

Heavy weight

Biggest subjects of criticism concerning the rifles are the too big amounts of ammo that they recquire and the too heavy weights.

Pistols and melee

Also interesting is the fact that 17% of the voters seem to prefer something else than a primary weapon (rifle, shotgun or magnum), but rather stick to a pistol or melee weapon.

Voting is still possible, just click here.

Tip of the week #4 – ‘How to counter groups’

As a big Zombie Panic! fan, you’ll probably be very well known with fighting ‘big groups’ as a zombie. And fighting a group of humans is probably the toughest thing to deal with. After all, even when a group of humans only carries a pistol, a lot of shots will still deal a lot of damage in a short amount of time. So how do you counter these big groups?

Six humans run towards the projector room in Cinema, one of them starts yelling: “You there, put the green cabinet in front of that door! And you, throw some stuff on the staircase!” The six survivors start to work on their ‘camproom’, trying to make it as secure as possible. Weapons get shared, ammo is being dropped on the ground, in other words: these humans will soon be all set up in this room. A zombie tries to break in, but two guys with rifles finish him off easily. The zombie now knows: it’s not gonna work like this.. So, how IS IT going to work?

The first way to deal with people in a room is by being in that room BEFORE the humans are there. A lot of camp spots are very well known and pretty much always used. A zombie can anticipate on this. Just ambush a human right from the start in that camping spot. This way, you’ll probably get rid of at least one human, but you also give a signal to the humans: if you stay here, you are gonna go down!

But ok, what if the humans still manage to settle in their camping spot, then what? From that moment, it is important that you stop running into this group of humans on your own. That way, the humans will hardly waste ammo, and you will just loose lives. So you should go after individuals instead. Kill everyone who is NOT in the room. Those people are much easier targets after all.

Once you’ve killed some humans, your group of zombies will grow bigger. It is very important that you try to co-ordinate with the other zombies. After all: you’ll only be able to take down this group if you work together.

First of all: try to bring down the humans’ barricades. Use the strong push and überpush to push over things like green cabinets. Keep in mind that, when you try this, it always works better to hit a green cabinet at an as high point as possible. This will increase the chance of the cabinet being pushed over.

Action info

Push = right mouse button
Überpush = right mouse button + shift (can only be used when you have some lunge in your feed-o-meter)

You’ll notice that, when you try to destroy barricades, the humans will try to shoot you down. Always retreat and re-generate your health when you get low on HP. This way, you will safe lives, but also: you will make the humans waste ammo, which makes the humans run out of ammo in the long run.

Once you managed do destroy some barricades and to create new openings you can go to the next step. You should now try to co-ordinate (with other zombies) to all charge at the same time, preferably from multiple ways. This way, it will be hard for the humans to deal with all the zombies. Like this, you will have a very big chance that some humans will die, or at least take damage.

If you are not able to clean out the room the first time, try to do it the second time. Once again, try to co-ordinate with your teammates. But if you play it like this, you can hardly lose.
